Peeps

I know it's almost a week after Easter, so this post is a bit untimely. I'm going to do it anyway. I had another Easter-related post idea, but decided not to run with it.

Anyway, on with the post.

Do you like Peeps? I hate 'em. Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what they taste like or actually what they are. Marshmallow, I think? I never tried them. Something about the fact that they were just this open piece of sticky candy in my Easter basket drove me crazy. But here's the strange thing--while I don't like them, I don't think an Easter basket is complete without the little rabbits.

In a probably not-so-wise effort of brand extension, I hear the company that makes Peeps has also been marketing its products during other major holidays. Hmmm? I can't imagine this working. I don't want to see Peeps in my Christmas stocking and I sure don't want to trick-or-treat for the sugary piece of mushy marshmallow. Peeps have established themselves as the candy of Easter. They stand above all the other candy in the basket. If you like them, you eagerly anticipate having them during the Easter season.

Is it me, or do we not look forward to things like we used to. I remember as a kid my mom would make Christmas cookies. I loved them. I would ask Mom, why don't you bake these cookies throughout the year?" Her answer basically was—If I did that, you wouldn't like them as much as you do when you have them only once a year.

So true. Maybe Peeps should consider that. I know, I know. They're in the business to sell candy, but don't they make other candies. Wouldn't the one-season exclusivity increase the demand? Build up the fact that Spring is coming and so are the Peeps. I would love to see the statistics of companies that extended their brands too far.

Anyway, enjoy your Peeps. Like I said, I don't like them and a week after Easter they're about the only thing left in my Easter basket.
